ASCOCORYNE SARCOIDES

FRUIT BODY: 0.5 - 1.5cm wide (per cup).  The striking reddish-purple irregular lobes emerge from wood before widening into cup/disc shaped ascocarps which are fused together to make one gelatinous mass. Sarcoides means resembling fleshiness. GILLS/PORES: N/A. FLESH: Rubbery, gelatinous, no distinct taste or smell. SPORES: Hyaline, ellipsoid with two oil drops. HABITAT: On dead and decaying hardwood. SEASON: Common.  Late summer to early winter.   EDIBILITY: Inedible.
